Zu den wohl bekanntesten deutschen Afrikaforschern zählt ohne Zweifel Heinrich Barth. Er wurde am 16. Februar 1821 in Hamburg geboren, hatte eine humanistische Schulbildung genossen und sprach Französisch, Spanisch, Englisch, Italienisch und Arabisch. Während des Studiums der Altertumskunde und Philologie wurde er durch die Bekanntschaft mit dem Geographen Karl Ritter mit der Bedeutung der Geografie für das Erkennen der Welt vertraut.
